'Incompetence and Lies': The claims made by Dominic Cummings against Boris and the Cabinet
Citizens were 'shocked' and 'disgusted' to hear the private conversations of the Prime Minister to his cohort. Masses of articles and video clips from the conference have been tweeted and retweeted by angry members of the public and celebrities such as Piers Morgan.
So what was actually said?
Dominic Cummings claimed the Prime Minister did not take the virus seriously and dismissed it as scary stories and rumours. The Prime Minister even said he would be injected with the virus live on television, according to Cummings, to prove to people it is nothing to fear, clearly showing he saw this virus as unimportant as the common cold and not the deadly virus that crippled the NHS, economy and killed 3.5M people worldwide to date.
The Coronavirus was also said to be compared with chicken pox and that so-called 'chicken pox parties' for the virus would be recommended to push herd immunity. The pushing of herd immunity was a big part of the claims made by Cummings and is said to have been the reason for the delays in taking action. As the government sat back to watch what happened, thousands of lives were lost. This indifferent attitude and lack of responsibility is said to have caused thousands of people to unnecessarily die. There is said to be evidence dating back to March 2020, before the first lockdown, that the government had purposely not suppressed the Coronavirus in order to allow it to pass through the community in a further attempt to push herd immunity.
After the first lockdown, which was said to have been employed too late, a new plan of action was to be formulated to ensure there is no collapse to the NHS. However, after a photo of the board was shared by Dominic Cummings, it brought even more shock and outrage, as written on the plan was 'who do we not save?'. PM Boris Johnson was also accused of saying that only the 80 year olds will die and that he would rather 'let the bodies pile' than have another lockdown, further impacting the economy.
Cummings went on further to attack the senior ministers, claiming no one made the right decision. He claimed to have advised the Prime Minister to fire Health Secretary Matt Hancock, as he was 'lying' to the cabinet and members of the public. His 'incompetence and lies' is said to have caused thousands people to die, as they were not getting the treatment they deserved. Cummings went on to apologise to the families of those who have died for the part he played in the decisions made.
But how much of this is true?
Cummings claims to have evidence to back some of his claims, but how much of it has been exaggerated? In times of peril, we often look for someone to blame. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock have had a lot of backlash from the public on how they have handled the pandemic. Will Cummings claims simply fuel the fire and hatred towards the Prime Minister and the Cabinet? What were his intentions behind revealing what was meant to be private conversations and government plans? With so many unanswered questions and the public demanding an explanation, we can only hope the Prime Minister will address each of the claims. Matt Hancock is to deliver a response to these attacks today, as yesterday he was 'busy saving lives'.
